The Reality Data Explorer is an example of how you dont need a bloated middleware framework to bridge the gap from Web Service and API to the end user in a web browser.

Written using the ArcGIS Javascript API directly it provides viewing, searching and querying functionality as well as layer selection and HTML5 geolocation lookup for mobile devices in a single 15KB Javascript file!

Data Explorer is entirely data driven and is compatible with all ArcGIS REST services in virtually all map projections. A few configuration tweaks and you have an aesthetically pleasing, intuitive map viewer for any GIS dataset worldwide. The Data Explorer is compatible across web browsers and is also engineered for mobile devices, with HTML5 geo-location built in, and again supports location conversion from latitude and longitude in virtually all projections. The Data Explorer allows users to simply click/tap on the map to get more information, search information, highlight and flash geographical features. And it works independently of the data content and as such ANY ArcGIS REST service can be plugged in.

Geographical data has gone mainstream in lightweight web GIS provided by popular search engines, the World Geodetic System 84 (WGS84) is being more and more used as a global standard for referencing positions. Location is being used more and more on mobile devices, any social media post, any photo taken on a smart phone can have a latitude and longitude geotagged. Organisations are also increasingly using live data from GPS coordinates (WGS84 or ETRS89 referencing systems for example), and needing to analyze and integrate this into their existing datasets held in their own grid referencing systems.

Designed as a demonstration for locating any coordinate on earth in virtually all geographical map-systems or projections, the global coordinate converter is an ArcGIS Javascript API application which allows users to enter coordinates in latitude or longitude or X and Y Easting and Northing, and convert between the two.

The application uses data from the EPSG and Reality GIS XML web services here to convert between coordinate systems, with an easy to use map window with both Imagery and Streetmap, and an HTML5 geolocation function added too.

The background graphics to this home page represent basically an ongoing experiment fusing HTML5 Web GL (using THREE.js) and integrating GIS Web Services in OGC WMTS Tiled Web Map Service format.

We basically have the globe with some stars in the background. Desktop users can zoom in and out using the mouse wheel, change the imagery on the globe from a choice of web services as defined by the buttons bottom right (and listed below). The Plus/minus buttons allow for speeding/slowing the animation and changing the level of detail of the Map Tile data respectively (up to a given maximum level of detail). In time Web GL aspects will be integrated into other javascript apps.
